THE DYING INDUSTRY IN TAMIL NADU
3rd April 2013, Orathuppulayam, Tamil Nadu, India. View inside an electric handloom unit run by farmers who turned to this new occupation after their land was spoiled in Orathuppulayam village situated right next to the Orathuppulayam dam on the 3rd April 2013, Orathuppulayam , Tamil Nadu, India. The village has allegedly been badly affected by toxic water from dyeing plants in nearby Tirupur relased by the Orathuppulayam dam, this has resulted in an exodus from the village by farmers who say their land has been ruined.
Since the explosion of the dyeing industry in Tamil Nadu between 1986 and 1989 when factory numbers soared from 99 to 450 the state has seen dramatic degradation of its rivers and water sources. Local activism continues to monitor and highlight the ongoing environmental impact
