THE DYING INDUSTRY IN TAMIL NADU
3rd April 2013, Orathuppulayam, Tamil Nadu, India. A goat herder pictured on the wall of the Orathuppulayam dam and reservoir on the 3rd April 2013. Built in the 80's the Orathuppulayam dam was intended to assist farm irrigation but it backfired when toxic effluent from local Tirupur dying factories flowed in and was released onto surrounding farmland causing widespread ecological damage putting many farmers out of business.
Since the explosion of the dyeing industry in Tamil Nadu between 1986 and 1989 when factory numbers soared from 99 to 450 the state has seen dramatic degradation of its rivers and water sources. Local activism continues to monitor and highlight the ongoing environmental impact
